Since I can’t do that, I can still say it looks straightforward to use, and there are many benefits of using a step sequencer in general. I would have liked to play around with it to say a bit more about why BabyDrummer is the right sequencer for you. Unfortunately, it’s another one I can’t check out myself as a Mac user. MiniSpillage is not a recreation of classic drum machine glories nor a homage to the past but instead aims to break new ground and provide the modern musician with an original electronic percussion instrument.

The sequencer is empty by default, so you’ll need to build your first pattern from scratch. MIDI notes outside a certain range will bypass BabyDrummer, and go straight to the sampler, meaning you can add single hits to existing patterns. At the top of the GUI, you’ll see a virtual keyboard that triggers preset patterns (shown in the menu below), fills, and so on. There are a bunch of functions that make it easy to get started straight away. Each lane is assigned to a drum and each contains sixteen steps. What you get is eight lanes by default and this number can be extended to sixteen. It functions much like Reason’s Drum Sequencer, which I’m sure many of you know well. With the free version you get access to a few different kits and each kit comes with a lot of options to customize, tweak and hone your ideal drum sound. This plugin is excellent for re-creating the sound of a real acoustic kit in your DAW. To use BabyDrummer, you just place it before your chosen sampler in the effects chain so that its output (MIDI pattern) feeds the sampler. Here’s a great free drum VST from Steven Slate. This stereo chorus features a Juno-60 chorus style sound with two modes, dry / wet control, stereo width, and volume knob. TAL-Chorus-LX is just one of several great tools they’ve made available for nothing.

There are many freeware drum samplers out there, like Sitala, BPB Cassette Drums, or Grooove BPB Edition. If you like VST freebies, then TAL Software is well worth keeping an eye on. The first thing to remember is that you must use it in conjunction with an instrument (virtual or even hardware if that’s your preference). So, on the surface, it has something to offer everyone.
